On Tuesday April 30th, I woke up in the Commercial Hotel in St Just to torrential rain. I checked the weather and it seemed that the rain would stop mid morning so I decided to delay my departure. I had a nice breakfast and got going around 10:30pm. it was still raining but soon dried off.

I finally left the hotel and headed north towards St Ives. The scenery was lovely but there were some very steep climbs and the cloudy rainy conditions continued.

The tin & copper mining industry

As I was cycling along the beautiful coastal route to St Ives, I encountered a number of remnants of the mining industry.

Historically, tin and copper as well as a few other metals have been mined in Cornwall and Devon.

I had been to St Ives in the 1980s with my friend Ann. It was so nice to be back there and reminisce about our camping trip in Cornwall. St Ives is a lovely town. I spent some time looking around the winding lanes and iconic seafront. I also had coffee and a scone 😋

Camborne

After a long day of riding, I decided to stop in the historic mining town of Camborne. As I was consulting my phone for directions, Russ showed up and helped me navigate to the hotel in Camborne. He had his delightful doggy Leo with him. Russ and his wife Nick (both cyclists) joined me in the bar of the hotel that evening.

The hotel was very nice. My room was really comfortable and it was great to meet Russ, Nicky, and Leo. A great day !
